W:Where are you going, John?
M:To buy a Hamburger for my brother Harry and a birthday gift for my girlfriend Linda.
Tomorrow is her birthday.

W:Can you take me to the railway station quickly? I'm afraid I won't be in time for my train.
M:I'll try. But it will take at least 15 minutes.
W:OK. In that case I'll still have another 15 minutes left for my nine forty train.
Text 5
W:Good afternoon, Professor Brown. Can you spare me five minutes?
M:Sure! What do you want to talk to me about?
W:Mm, I want to change my major and I need your advice on it now.
Text 6
M:Why are you crying, Sandra?
W:I'm feeling pretty down right now.
M:Tell me about it. Maybe I can help.
W:Well, even though I like my job here a lot, I find myself thinking more and more about home.
M:That’s normal, Sandra. The same thing happened to me. It’s one of the results of culture
shock, I think.
W:What can I do about it?
M:There's nothing wrong in thinking about home. Keeping in touch with your family regularly
will help.
W:Will that solve what is bothering me?
M:I think you'll get it over in time.
Text 7
M:Tell me, Grace. What makes you come here?
W:Oh, I think Harvard is one of the finest universities in the world. I applied, so here I am.
M:Good for you! I'm sure you'll love it. I'll always remember my college days.
W:What were they like?
M:It was one of the best times of my life.
W:Did everything go smoothly?
M:No, sometimes it was also difficult, but I made it and became a college graduate.
W:How did you feel when you graduated?
M:It was a proud day for me. My family attended the graduation ceremony.
W:What did you do after you graduated?
M:I was planning to attend graduate school, but then I was offered a good job doing design in
a publisher, so I changed my mind.
W:Sounds like you're happy with that decision.
M:I sure am.

W:Oh, dear!
M:I'm sorry. I do hope I haven't hurt you.
W:Oh, no. I was just a little scared. That's all right. It's quite all right.
M:But it isn't all right. I made you drop your shopping bags. Let me pick these bags up.
W:You must have been in a great hurry. Never mind.
M:I was only going to catch the bus. I'm afraid I wasn't looking where I was going. I hope
nothing was destroyed.
W:Oh, no. Thank you very much.
M:I do apologize.
W:Don't worry about it. There is no need to apologize. Look! Here comes the bus. You’ll catch
it if you run.
M:Oh, so I shall.
Text 9
W:Dad, what will we have for dinner?
M:I don't know. Maybe fried fish, chicken soup and...
W:Oh, no, I'm tired of such things now.
M:I'm sorry. But that is the only thing I can cook. What do you want to have then?
W:I do wish Mom were at home. Why don't we go and eat out for a change?
M:Oh, that's a good idea. I like Kentucky fried chicken very much.
W:Dad, you always talk about fried chicken. Let's have something different. I'd like to go to
McDonald’s this time.
M:OK then. You'll drive, won’t you?
W:No, I'm a bit tired today. You should drive.
M:OK, OK. I always do things like that. I hope your Mom will be back soon. Ah,here we are.
W:Dad, what would you like to have? I’d like a hamburger.
M:I want one, too. And some French fries, Jill?
W:Please buy me some salad instead. And a glass of Coke. OK?
M:Hamburger, salad, and a glass of Coke. Is that all for you, Jill?
W:Right, and give me an ice cream, too. I’ll go and find the seats.
M:And I'll get some vegetables for myself, and a coffee...

Good morning. Welcome to News Time. Yesterday, a firefighter crossed a partly frozen Arizona Lake to rescue two teenagers, who paid no attention to the danger sign “THIN ICE, STAY AWAY”. The boys hung onto a tree after ice began to crack. A girl stayed on the bank. She noticed them and called for help.
Jack, a man on the ice rescue team, moved forward on the ice carefully to save the boys. When he covered half of the 200 feet, the ice broke. He had to make his way through the water. The training he had received worked as designed.
It was already dark by the time the boys were taken back to the bank. The boys didn't seem to be frightened, but their hands and feet got pretty cold. They were taken to hospital for treatment.
“We often have kids trying to see how far out they can go,” said the spokesman. “That was pretty foolish, Arizona Lake, usually doesn't get cold enough for ice to freeze solidly. There was probably an inch of ice in the middle of the Lake.”
